After a few weeks of dabbling in chocolate candy treats, I decided to go back and feature something more traditional on the blog this week. With Claudia’s busy work schedule, we have been unable to get together to create some of her favourites. Therefore, I have been forced to rely on inspiration elsewhere. I wanted to make something classic and simple. Something that was warm and reminded me of the comforts of home. After a few days of searching, it finally hit me. Apples and cinnamon. I had it!

The sweet, warm aroma that filled my house while this delicious Apple Crumble baked what exactly I was craving. This is probably the best Apple Crumble I have ever had. The recipe was adapted from the wonderful blog the parsley thief. Sweet, rich, warm cinnamon apples topped with a buttery, crunchy top. Not to mention the delicious vanilla ice cream and caramel you can pair with it! This dessert is exactly what you need on a cold winter afternoon or a hot summer day.

You will need:

For the filling:
8 large Granny Smith apples, peeled & cored
1 tsp grated lemon zest
1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

For the topping:
1-1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup cold unsalted butter, diced
Your favourite caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream (optional)

If you haven’t already, core and peel your apples.

Dice your apples into bite-sized chunks and place in a large bowl.

Zest your lemon.

Add 1 tsp to your diced apples.

Squeeze half of your lemon and add 1 tbsp of juice to the diced apples and zest.

Next add your cinnamon, nutmeg, white sugar and flour.

Mix well.

Place apple mixture into an ungreased 13 x 9 inch baking dish.

Now for the delicious topping!

Dice your cold butter into cubes.

Add butter, white sugar, and flour to electric mixing bowl.

Also add rolled oats, brown sugar and kosher salt.

With a paddle attachment mix on low speed for 1-2 minutes, until the butter is broken into little pieces.

Crumble the mixture evenly over the apples.

Bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for 1 hour, or until the topping is brown and the apples are bubbling.

Your delicious Apple Crumble should look like so.

I topped this beauty with the leftover salted caramel I had from our Salted Caramel Chocolates recipe. But you can use whatever you have.

Best served warm with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream.

Enjoy!

Yes, it’s the “Boisenberry” colour according to KitchenAid. It was a birthday gift. I love it so much and can’t imagine what it was like before I had it!
